“Nizamuddin Basti is a cradle of Hindustani culture since the time of Amir Khusrau who composed many of his qawwalis in honour of saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. Rahim is buried here, there are also Ghalib and Jahanara Begum. So it’s not only about its architectural heritage but culture too. Somehow, that culture has disappeared in the past three to four decades. NEW DELHI: It’s that time of the year again when the historical locale of Nizamuddin will resonate with the qawwalis of Qadar Niazi and plays like ‘Rahiman Paani Rakhiye…’, reminiscent of 700 years of the basti’s heritage. With the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) all set to begin the fifth edition of the three-day Nizamuddin Apni Basti Mela from November 27, visitors will witness a whole gamut of the culture and traditions it breathes.
As part of the ongoing Nizamuddin Urban Renewal Project, the mela will showcase the craft skills, music traditions, culinary and architectural heritage, and oral history of the local communities residing in Nizamuddin Basti through a series of plays, heritage and food walks, and sale of products made there.
