The Institute for Canadian Citizenship has selected Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi as the 13th LaFontaine-Baldwin Symposium speaker, co-presented with the Stratford Festival. Nenshi will share his thoughts on citizenship and the importance of inclusion this Fall.
“I am thrilled and honoured to be the 2015 LaFontaine-Baldwin Symposium lecturer. This is a unique opportunity to celebrate citizenship — that active participation in society by both new and not-so-new Canadians that makes our communities thrive.”
– Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, the winner of the 2014 World Mayor Prize, is the most admired mayor of any large Canadian city

The LaFontaine-Baldwin Symposium is an exclusive opportunity to participate in the ICC’s efforts to build the national conversation on citizenship and inclusion. Listen to Nenshi’s passionate ideas and then add your voice to the post-lecture roundtable discussions with Nenshi and ICC leaders — John Ralston Saul, Adrienne Clarkson and Charlie Foran.
Why Nenshi?
“Each year we invite a speaker who can extend our conversation in new directions with original and inclusive ideas. Naheed Nenshi will bring the force of his thinking about citizenship and cities, along with his remarkable personal narrative, to the fore, ensuring another important Symposium conversation about who we are as a country.”
– Charlie Foran, Institute for Canadian Citizenship CEO
Globally known for his passion to make cities, especially Calgary, work better, Naheed Nenshi is currently serving his second term and is Calgary’s 36th mayor. Earlier this year, he became the first recipient of the “World Mayor” prize awarded by the City Mayors Foundation, an international urban affairs think tank.
He was Canada’s first tenured professor in the field of nonprofit management at Mount Royal University’s Bissett School of Business and a trusted business advisor to corporate leaders in Canada and the USA. Nenshi is also the lead author of Building Up: Making Canada’s Cities Magnets for Talent and Engines of Development.

About LaFontaine-Baldwin Symposium
Founded in 2000 by Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) Co-Chair John Ralston Saul, the LaFontaine-Baldwin Symposium is a signature event hosted across the country, showcasing leading thinkers. This intellectual platform allows us to talk about the themes that underlie the work we do on a daily basis through Building Citizenship, CAP and ICC Insights.
Unlike most speaker series, the Symposium encourages two-way communication between the audience and our lecturers. The event consists of a keynote address followed by roundtable discussions to create an inspiring space for new perspectives and idea sharing.
Each year, we use a different lens to explore the new Canadian voice. Although our speakers may not have a direct immigrant narrative, their work and life experiences allow them to express themes and perspectives that offer different views on this topic. To ensure the new citizen voice is present, we invite 15 Cultural Access Pass members to attend as our ambassadors and offer discounted tickets to all CAP members.
