A lasting tribute to Arif Merani

A lasting tribute to Arif MeraniNov. 8 fundraiser planned as Merani family continues to give back in memory of son

Arif Merani would be smiling down on his family and friends.

A caring and selfless individual who was tragically killed in a car accident last Thanksgiving, Arif was someone who dedicated himself to giving back. From helping organize a vigil for the Montreal Massacre in Ottawa, where he was attending Carleton University, to cleaning up litter in neighbourhood parks, Arif was engaged in the community and proud of it.

Since his death last year, his family has carried on the torch. Last year, shortly after he died, his family made a $13,000 donation to Gillian’s Place in his memory. Since then, they have raised about $150,000 for charitable causes thanks to other events, including the World Partnership Walk this summer and the Walk a Mile in HER Shoes earlier this month, and have donated their time and assistance to many other causes, including a local soup kitchen in Niagara Falls.

“He cared about people, he cared about giving back,” said Arif’s father Moe. “We’re carrying on the work he did and it’s a great way to remember him.”
