In 2010, Tajikistan and Afghanistan sealed a deal enabling Afghans from Badakhshan Province to receive free medical care in Khorog, or to have a Tajik doctor visit them in Afghanistan, also free of charge. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the Tajik Ministry of Health and Social Protection make the charitable effort possible.
“The project is aimed at improving the quality of medical services in Afghan Badakhshan, specifically in the border regions, which are home to 275,000 Afghans who are cut off from the central government,” Dr. Alibek Alibekov, co-ordinator of the AKDN trans-border healthcare programme, said.
