BY CLARA HO, POSTMEDIA NEWS – From an early age, Zeenab Kassam had a giving spirit that led her to a nursing career and volunteer stints around the world.
She was due to return home to Calgary on Thursday after spending a year and a half in Afghanistan volunteering as an English teacher through the Aga Khan Development Network.
Instead, it was a day of mourning as her family prepared for the repatriation of her remains Friday, a week after she was killed by armed Taliban terrorists in a Kabul hotel, along with eight other guests.
Amid his grief and anger, her brother Karim-Aly Kassam had a strong message to those who orchestrated the attack, ”the men who hide in the shadows, who connived these young men to choose violence.”
“You have wounded us, but you have not intimidated us. You will never intimidate us,” her brother Karim-Aly Kassam told reporters Thursday, as his daughter Rafia stood nearby.
“You may kill one of us, but our commitment to peace through mutual understanding, to the education of both women and men, to unconditional voluntary service will not be compromised.”
