Having implemented about 200 projects in 37 districts in northern Afghanistan, the Stabilisation Programme Northern Afghanistan (SPNA) has made a visible contribution towards stability in that part of the country. The SPNA covers a host of small-scale infrastructure measures like roads or bridges which bring about an immediate improvement in the population’s living conditions and thus aim to promote the stabilisation of fragile districts. The projects are suggested and prioritised by the District Development Assemblies. This also serves to strengthen local administrative structures and democratic processes.
The Aga Khan Foundation Afghanistan and the non-governmental organisations Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED) and Mercy Corps implement the programme on the ground. All three organisations train the District Development Assemblies and support them in selecting individual projects.
