Excerpt: More recently city council itself balanced the fate of the Bata office building in Don Mills with the potential for Toronto to have a major cultural centre built by the Aga Khan Foundation. The Bata office building was greatly admired by architects and architectural historians and was recommended for designation as a heritage building.
In that case I think Toronto city council made the right, if difficult, decision to allow its demolition. The Aga Khan Museum will soon open to show its collection of rare and ancient Muslim art. The architect of the museum is one of Japan’s most celebrated architects, Fumihiko Maki.
