Living in a dirt-poor village in northern Afghanistan on less than $2 a day, Fareema Begum would probably be prohibited from even entering a bank, never mind applying for a line of credit.
Yet, beyond all odds, and largely thanks to the Aga Khan Foundation, the mother of two was able to take out a $25 loan, buy a secondhand sewing machine and create a livelihood for herself.
“She’s now earning $2 a week and that’s real progress in her life,” said Shellina Lakhdhir, a regional campaign manager with Aga Khan Foundation Canada, which is staging the World Partnership Walk in Vancouver this Sunday to raise money for development and education programs in the world’s poorest villages. “Can you imagine? It’s what we spend on a coffee in one day.”
