Pak-US national Dr Jaffer Qamar made chief economist

Dr. Jaffer Qamar has recently been appointed ‘Chief Economist’ of the Planning Commission of Pakistan by the Prime Minister.

Dr. Qamar, an Ismaili from Karachi, has studied and worked in the US for over three decades. He holds a PhD in Economics and Finance from University of Chicago and worked in the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Illinois. He has also worked as a consultant with the Asian Development Bank and carries experience in Program Management and Financial and Economic Analysis.

Without having any permanent chief economist in the Planning Commission for last five years, Prime Minister Yusuf Reza Gilani has finally appointed a US national Dr Jaffer Qamar to this slot with MP-1 scale for two-year tenure, it is learnt.

Having dual nationality of the US and Pakistan, the newly appointed Chief Economist Dr Jaffer Qamar belongs to Sindh. A senior government official told ‘The News’ that the notification for the appointment of Dr Jaffer Qamar for the slot of the chief economist was issued by the competent authority on Tuesday.
