Rumi and the Imagery of the Sufis
Presented by Dr. Michael Barry, Lecturer in Near Eastern Studies, Princeton University
The poetry of Rumi, and the mystic vision it reflects, touched deep aesthetic chords in classical Islamic civilization. Dr. Michael Barry explores three of Rumi´s most moving themes—the ecstatic dervish dance, the path of love for a beautiful human face leading to love of God, and the self-humbling of worldly princes before cave-dwelling hermits— and how they inspired some of the greatest Persian, Central Asian, Turkish, and Indo-Muslim manuscript paintings of the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries.
This lecture is generously cosponsored by His Highness Prince Aga Khan Shia Imami Ismaili Council for the Southwestern United States.
