Amadeus Choir reflects city’s changing face, mention of composer Hussein Janmohamed

[Lydia] Adams currently has a call out to high school students in the GTA to write a composition on a First Nations theme. A recent concert with the Elmer Iseler Singers featured a new work anchored in Muslim chant, by Vancouver composer Hussein Janmohamed.

The biggest challenge in being true to a culture, says Adams, is finding the right people to write the music.

“You need people who are going to be authentic for different traditions,” she explains. “It’s going to take a while, because some Toronto cultures have no history of choral music. At our last event, we had 30 to 40 people who had never been to a choral concert before, and were blown away by the new piece (by Janmohamed).”
