MBK Ventura, founded in 2003 by the husband-and-wife team of Dhanani and Elizabeth Sweeting, was patterned after the Grameen Bank. The program makes small loans of between $50 and $300 to support the small business enterprises of impoverished women who often live on less than one dollar a day. In its brief history, MBK Ventura has grown from a few hundred borrowers to more than 100,000. Along the way, it has won a number of prestigious honors including the Grameen Foundation Excellence Award in 2008, Unitus Achievement Award in 2008, a Mix Market #1 Ranking out of 1,300 Micro Finance Institutions in the world in 2008 and the Ernst & Young Finalist, Social Entrepreneur of the Year for 2007.
Despite the organization’s success, Dhanani, an economist by training, told Moore that he wanted an objective measure of the program’s impact on the women it served. “Even with the rapid growth of microfinance around the world, the number of empirical studies that measure its impact are few,” he said.
