Throughout Central Asia, female musicians, dancers, and entertainers have long been an important part of social life. This film introduces ten remarkable women whose voices and instruments have made a deep imprint on the soundscape of central asia in our own time.
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, has produced a 10-CD set documenting the musics of Central Asia.

I copied this post onto my Facebook profile and this comment came in from Marc Keshavje:
I found what the singer from Kazakhstan said very interesting: “It is impossible for someone to learn this singing. It has to be in a person’s blood from even before birth. The spirit and strength to sing jyr are given by God and by the spirits of ancestors.”

this song and music s immersed in the spirit (soul) of mountain people only they can articulate and comprehend it, others can only smell it from far away lands. I love mountain music and songs, which stir our hearts and souls.
