Hina Musa – Supporting Global Brigades

global brigades
Hina is a recent pre-law graduate from the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently planning a trip with other students and legal professionals through Global Law Brigades. They will be traveling to an indigenous community in Panama to work with local lawyers in legalizing an NGO for education advancement. They will also be creating a scholarship fund for education advancement, conducting alternative dispute resolution workshops, and creating legal resource guides to address local legal issues within the community.

Hina MusaMessage from Hina Musa.

I will soon be joining a group of other dedicated students and legal professionals, on a trip to Panama to participate in a “law brigade” to learn about international and domestic law in Latin America, and work together with local organizations on urban and rural legal issues. One of our largest projects during the trip will involve legalizing an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) for education advancement. Our group will also consult with community members to research and prepare “Legal Resource Guides” to address the specific needs of the communities we will work with.

Global Law Brigades is a secular, international network of volunteer students and law professionals who travel overseas to work with at-risk communities to assess and develop legal strategies that improve quality of life.

Our Values:
– Fostering human rights
– Respecting local culture
– Preserving the environment
– Promoting legal empowerment

This program is not your typical one-week student trip. Before my brigade we will conduct preliminary research about legal issues and existing legal services. During the brigade we will learn about the international and local legal systems that govern local communities, and frame opportunities for future developments. We will also gather resource materials for community centers and libraries including computer hardware and software, Spanish language books for professionals and young people, and educational supplies.

After the brigade, we will analyze the current legal resources and systems relevant to community needs. We will also follow up with the organizations and communities that we collaborate with regarding the NGO and ongoing and future projects. Our organization will focus on both urban and rural communities regarding socially and environmentally responsible development strategies, and human rights concerns including the unique challenges faced by women, migrants, refugees, and indigenous communities.

To make this trip a success, I need your help in one of two ways:

1) As a sponsor champion (any amount) to help me pay for my trip and to contribute to legal empowerment projects in urban and rural communities (please click the link below.)

2) And / or send me warm thoughts and kind wishes as I embark on my brigade.

Thank you for your support!

  1. Dear Hina Musa.
Greetings from near Canberra in Australia. I send you warm greetings (even though its winter here) as you prepare to travel to Panama and work with indigenous people there.

I have been very concerned over the massacre in Peru last week of a group of indigenous protesters near Bagua along with the killing of about 20 police over disputes regarding land ownership and ownership of resources.

Indigenous people in many Latin American countries need the sort of suport your group are offering and your actions give me hope that things can change for the better.
Thank you for the hope and support you are offering. Sadly I am a pensioner so I cannot support you financially but I offer my prayers and my encouragement towards your efforts.

I fully support you in your four key values. God bless you and your group Hina. Please keep me informed of your adventures and progress
    Best Regards Charlie
