“I knew weight-loss surgery wasn’t an instant fix,” Ward said. “I’ve been tracking what I eat for five years. I have a food diary with me. I didn’t realize how much the weight had come back up until, I like to say, it’s too late.”

But bariatric surgeons Dr. Daniel Birch and Dr. Shahzeer Karmali hope it isn’t too late. Today, they will perform the endoluminal pouch reduction on Ward in an effort to get her back on track.

“Our goal is to stop this weight regain and stop the cycle and get her back on the weight-loss journey,” said Karmali, who received training on the new surgery while doing a medical fellowship in the U.S.
