Scarcity of drinking water causes renal stone disease – Aga Khan University

By our correspondent

KARACHI: Pakistan is located in a region known for high prevalence of renal stone disease, caused mainly by the hot and humid climate and scarcity of drinking water, said Dr Khurrum Siddiqui, Assistant Prof and Consultant Urologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).

He was speaking at a seminar titled ‘Continued Medical Education’ at the AKUH on Sunday.

ìLack of awareness and medical facilities has made stone disease the leading cause of end stage renal disease (ESRD) in Pakistan,î he said. However, recent advancements in the management of stone disease have virtually eliminated it from the list of leading causes of ESRD.

“Open surgery for this condition is now becoming obsolete and extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy, percutancous and endoscopic surgery have established their safety and efficacy to treat urolithiasis,” he said.

Dr Siddique said that in our daily practice we encounter stones of all shapes and sizes, we need to update our understanding of the various treatment options for each given situation and offer the treatment with maximum efficiency and minimal morbidity.
