The Virgin Mary: A Muslim Role Model By Dr Zahra Jamal (@znjamal)

Mary, the humble mother of Jesus, is a model of faith, humility, and virtue – both in the Bible, and in the Quran, the holy book of Muslims.

In this video, Dr. Zahra Jamal (Founder and CEO of The Inclusion Expert, a minority woman-owned diversity consultancy supporting religious, racial, and gender diversity, with expertise in Muslim diversity) explains:

1) How Christians and Muslims express love for Lady Maryam, as she is called in the Quran;
2) What Dr. Zahra believe compassion means in Islam (drawing on Ibn ‘Arabi) ;
3) What we can learn from key moments in Mary’s life, as recounted in the Quran, and why God describes her as “chosen among all women of the worlds”, “a sign for humanity”, and “a model” of patience, humility, compassion, faith, and justice; and
4) The relevance of Mary among Muslims today.

  1. To some extent we have Bibi Fatima. However, we must be careful elevating such ladies to a pinnacle! Look at Sita – ideal wife willing to sacrifice for her husband- it has been used as a role model for women in India to repress them
