Professor Nargis Virani has taught a variety of courses related to Arabic language, literature, Qur’anic and Islamic Studies, Women’s Studies, and Middle Eastern Films at the University of British Columbia, Washington University in St. Louis, and The New School in New York City. She holds a PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Harvard University and has studied the Qur’an extensively at Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo.
Originally hailing from Mumbai, India, Dr. Virani has lived, worked, and is intimately familiar with a dizzying variety of countries across the world, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Kenya, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, and Israel. She speaks English, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Kacchi, Arabic, and Persian fluently.
Professor Virani expects to publish two books on Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi’s multilingual poetry entitled, “I am the Nightingale of the Merciful”: Translation of Rumi’s Multilingual Poems with an Introductory Essay, and Keeping God’s Secrets: Multilinguality and Mystical Discourse in Jalaluddin Rumi’s Lyrical Poems under contract with the University of South Carolina Press. She is currently working on another book project tentatively entitled, The Qur’an in Muslim Literary and Mystical Memory.
