Hello, I am from Iringa, Tanzania. I used to study at the H. H. The Aga Khan School. I finished my 7th Std in 1968. I left the school when I was in Form ! in the Secondary School.
I have very happy memories of the school. It had a lovely garden of roses in the front. And very large play grounds. After school, we used to enjoy our basketball game, a favourite of all the students.
The school was managed very well, a Mr Khan from Pakistan was the principal.
I wonder if there is anyone searching for the ex students. We went back to Iringa in 1974, but we never visited the school, as we heard that things had changed and so didnot want to get upset.
Whilst in UK, I tried to find out if there were any students from the school, but was not possible.
I now reside in Vadodara.

I left Iringa in 1970 and went to London for treatment for my polio in my right leg.
I came back and then left for Karachi, Pakistan in 1971, stayed there till 1976, and then came to Vancouver, Canada.
I married Zinat Saferali, originally of Njombe and Iringa. we got married in Canada in 1978.
we have 2 adult children, our son Abid is now 27 years and just graduated as a CA and works for Deloitte in Vancouver.
I opened a store selling BBQs and outdoor patio furniture in 2007.

How is Moore, Mansoor, I think you also had brother Aladin and your sister my dad use to call her Dewali as she was born around that time.
Shashi visited Iringa in January this year then went to India. He came back on 7th March and fell sick. Was admitted in hospital and passed away after a week.

Narendra, I have specifically asked for pictures from Iringans who attended AK School as well as anything else to remember Shashi. Nure, Mansur, Shiraz and Najma (Divali) particularly remember your father Ranchod Raninga for his kindness and especially the puris and sweets around divali time. Most people left Tanzania in a hurry or in my case to go university and we had no room to carry pictures accumulated over generations in Africa.

Its a small world.I studied at the Aga Khan sec school from 1958 to 1964(form IV) then went to India in 1968 with my family.We lived there (Rajkot) for 23 years and settled in the uk (Leicester) in 1991.I did go back to Iringa in 2009 but it was not the same,you know.It is a big town now. Time changes everything. By the way, my son got married in November 2009 at 30 purshotamnagar,Akota area, near Alkapuri,Vadodara ! I still remember almost everyone in Iringa but sorry cannot recall you.There was Iringa Printers shop, Iringa Bookshop just in front of Iringa Hotel. Both were Patels. I remember all the places in Iringa that you mentioned. But I’d be unable to remember you because I was born in 1957. You left when I was still too young. I’m amazed that you still know Kiswahili after all these years.
You might perhaps know my father, Anver Jessa. He used to work for Southern Highlands Roadways; then went on to own the Esso petrol station.
We were neighbors of M.R.Juma, right across from the Sokoni (the local market.)

Raniga’s father was a goldsmith and his store was in Rajabali Shivji Hasmani (my grandfather’s) building in front of the sokoni. Hello Shiraz Shivji, Its been a very long time and nostalgia has creeped in along with old age. A few minor corrections though, but in good taste. Munira who you met in JK is my niece. If memory serves me right you were actually in class with Amin Kachra, Mohamed Hamir, Hussein Aloo, Anar Kassamali, Khairoon Ladha and so on. Shashikant Raninga was at that time in Form III with Chandrakant Peshawaria(Suthar) Mohamed Nurmohamed, Amin Manji, Nizar Ahmed Esmail etc etc. Yes I remember your Grandfathers shop where Raninga had his Goldsmith shop which later was turned into a watch Repair facility by Shashi’s older brother. Long time ago your grandfather also had a Bicycle dealership. By the way your younger brother Alnoor also has been in touch with my younger brother Nurallah who lives in Connecticut. I believe you have a niece who studies at Boston University. Until next time.

My class mates were Allaudin Jetha, Mangla Patel of Iringa Prinyers, Chandrika Mistry – C B Mistry ( they were staying near Kingsway Garage), Irene Rebello,Tazim Ladha (owners of Kingsway Garage), Nasim Daya, Narmin Jaffer, Shiraz Dharamsi, Nevin Kassam, Ashwin Jetha of Venus Studio and Firoz Juma of Highland Cinema etc.
Played football with Agakhan Sports Club (Young Ismails) Iringa.
Mr Thakore was our Headmaster.
Class teachers were Nizar Daya and Hassan Rajabali and Jassani.
Karim I remember Mr Anwer Jessa very well as he used to give us lift to school in Southern Highland Roadways Bus.
Nadia I remember your dad working with TFA as he was my dad’s friend, your dad used to drive Peugeot 404 pickup.
We shifted from Iringa to Dar es salaam in 1973 and have been living in Dar ever since.

I was in the last Std 8 before the infamous “Territorial” exam was implemented for Std 7. Most of our class (the boys from Std 8) then went to Iyunga Secondary (boarding) School in Mbeya, while the girls went to Dar es Salaam.

It was with complete surprise that I stumbled upon this Site. My name is Chandrasen Durve and I still remember you after over 45 years!! Your dear father had a clothes shop in town and I remember my mother bought a lovely cream jumper from him as the last item of clothing that we as a family bought just before we immigrated to the UK. That jumper kept me warm for many a year in the UK and I remembered you every time I wore it! If I am not mistaken I wrote to you at or during the Apollo 11 moon landing (1969) when you were in Nairobi, I do not know how I got your address! You were one of my best friends and I still remember shaking your hand saying ‘goodbye forever’ to you, I was very sad to leave!!
You are correct, Imtias Mohammed Thakore was the headmaster of our school at our time, in fact it was Mr Takore who imported all those wonderful roses from Kenya and planted them in front of the school. He was a wonderful gardner, he also had wonderful handwriting even when he wrote whole sentences on the blackboard, I copied his style of handwriting, the characteristic forward slanting regular size letters. I continue to try to write like him to this very day and needless to say I remember him every time I write. He was a gentleman, he had one son who was also called Imtias.
Leaving Iringa had a tremendous effect on my life, I still remember all the names of the students in our standard Viii class, like Salim Manji, Shaida Kurji, the beautiful Rosemin Jan Mohammed, Mohammed Sachu and so on and the others who lived at the Boarding School like Cha Cha Chambili and Mohammed Sunderji (the business man who sold sweets to us all!) Some other names Mohammed Kamru, Shiraz Walli and others who played cricket, and teachers such as N. Daya, H.K. Hassan, Mr Parbani, Mr Khan who I understand became headmaster after Mr Takore. I also remember Raymond Magimba the tallest chap in our class.
I lived with my uncle( mothers younger brother) Dr S Y Kelshiker who ran the Aga khan hospital in Iringa and we lived next to the school in a bunglow. I was encouraged to be a boy scout by one of our classmates’ brother/uncle. In fact they ended up buying the Ambassador Hotel in Iringa. As a boy scout, escorting my uncle, I had the privilege and honour of meeting His Royal Highness the Aga khan on his visit to Iringa at the evening performance held at the Secondary School hall.
Just before we emigrated I lived with my grandfather Dr YB Kelshiker, who lived next to the Police Station near the Tivoli Cinema. My father died many years previously in fact just before I was born. My grandfather lived in London until he was 104 years old (1996) and my mother passed away in 2004. My uncle is well and lives in London having been retired for many years. His son Amol is a well-known doctor in Pinner, he too was a pupil of our School although he was many years behind us!
Is the White Horse Hotel still going? I have had many English Mining colleagues who have been to Iringa on their way to other parts of that area, but I have never had the chance to be back.
I am a mining engineer and a bit of an expert on minerals, probably one of the first fully qualified ‘Tanzanian’ Mining Engineers certainly the first Doctor of Mining! I have been somewhat lucky in that I have had the opportunity to travel and work in many different countries such as Canada, Turkey, Brazil Congo the UK, China and so on. I now live in Manchester UK. I would love to communicate with you, I do intend coming to Tanzania hopefully within the year and will of course visit Iringa. I am awaiting an invite from the Minister of mineral resources to do so. I would love to work in Tanzania as a consultant or even to do business in the minerals game, I am aware of several potential opportunities. I have started learning Swahili again, it’s like riding a bicycle, you never ever fully forget, in any case I have the memory of an elephant, although it is beginning to fade a little with age!!

I am sorry that I missed your email of Jan 2013! Anyway I do remember you and your Elvis hairstyle, I remember that you lived with your uncle opposite the J.K and opposite Rosemin Nurmohammed’s family shop? I believe that your uncle had a textile shop? Yes it was Shiraz Sunderji that was our sweet supplier, he lived in the boarding school in the Agakhan school complex, I used t meet that bording house students in the evenings because we lived right next to the School on the left hand side as you entered the school main entrance from the road in. I live in Manchester in the UK now, write to me my email is chandra@camborneslate.com. I was sad to hear about Cha Cha Chimbili, he too was a boarder, we often played in the evenings in the school ground, including with Mr Thakore’s and Mr Parbani’s sons!

I have been in communication with a few others but have been very fractured in this! life is so busy these days, not like in Iringa where we all had a bit of time , its like a different lifetime in a different Universe!

I am so very happy to go through the replies – just by chance. After I posted my story, waited a long time for replies n then stopped the Ismaily Mail thinking that I wont get any response.
Today, I was just searching for my work on my name on the web n then I saw my post on the Ismailimail and that there were replies to it. So thank you all so much, so many have and will join the links.
So here I am sending you all a reply. Just to know that our classmates are somewhere makes one feel so very happy. Will try n reply to ones with the emails.
The Internet has made the world smaller then ever, at least giving us a chance to search and find out the known people. Shall be very lucky to see a friend after so many years – for the time being am happy just to convey my message and say hello to all.
Its so very touching and emotional to go through your nice mails.
I came to India in 1970 Jan, in 69 I was in Form I. Studied in Amdavad, Gujarat. Came back to Iringa for a few months n then went to Uk with my family. Later on got married and few times tried to settle in UK but didnt like the lifestyle there. Was in Staffordshire for 6 years with my daughter and son for their studies. That’s when I did my Arts at the Lichfield Arts College. My three sisters and sister in law reside there with their families. We lost our parents – my mother 4 years back and my brother Ashwin 5 yrs back. But I still have family photos taken in Iringa – in the studio as well. Our family album in Uk has one of the photos taken in the classroom with the classmates. Will try n get it if I can.
I remember my brother had a friend – a Singh – who was in his class, they had a garage business going down the mountain. He wanted to come back to Iringa but didnot get a chance.
Our Venus Studio was on the right side of the road going towards school. The Sultan Store – which later on moved at the further end – before the building where Nadia’s dad, I think used to work – then us, then the building of the Barclays Bank and the corner end was the petrol Station. There was a road leading to the White Horse Inn on the right and carrying on the main road were the Iringa Bookshop and other shops. The new public Library then was other side of road leading to town. Further towards the School was the big open ground on the right where there were residentails and the Gohil family lived there and many other families. Further up the houses on the left were lovely – there were done up during the visit of His Highness The Aga Khan.
Our class had 2 Rosemins, one Rose who was a Khoja and another Rose who was a local.
I remember you all – Nadia, Rosemin, Yasmin, Shairoz and others. One of the other Patel girl Taru – lives in Uk. Her parents – Iringa Bookshop – come to Vadodara (Baroda) nearly every winter. I saw her few years back when she was here. Other then that have never seen anyone from Iringa. Those were the days where one took the fee money Sh 10 in the compass box and paid during the roll call. The canteen at the back used to serve tasty chana and popcorn.
One of our relatives from the in-laws side owns a canning factory in Iringa. Other then that I would go on google and see the photos of Iringa and also had searched for our School history but no success.
Apart from the lovely memory of the School and the students dont have any photos – wish we had this technology then. The Garden would have looked so beautiful with the School building and if taken from far would have had the backdrop of the Mountain at the immediate backside. Picasso and Kodak Gallery would have done wonders to the scenic beauty of Our Iringa and The Aga Khan School – of course with us all captured in our school days and our youth!!!!!
Now most of us are 50 plus with a grandchild clutching us or us holding one of them!!!!!!
The first time we went to the Uk, would be greeted as young lady and now when I visit am dying to hear those words just once. Most of the Indian families from E Africa are in Uk and some in America and of course quite a few here in India – mostly in Gujarat.
Shall try and keep you posted of my news when I can.
Last year was in Peublo, Colorado, to be with my daughter Shefali and her husband and family. She has a baby girl Anushka who is now 8 mths. My son studied in Uk after I left and worked in Bedford. He is at present in Pueblo n will decide where he wants to settle.
So I am very much in Vadodara if anyone would like to visit. Tel Resi: 0091 265 2356462
The north is very beautiful and scenic and the south has its own charm. Lots to see and explore. But still our own hill station back there was lovely then.

Oh Nalini, I am so happy to read your response, brought back all the lovely memories of Iringa. I was so sorry to hear about your brother Ashwin, I do remember him very well. So many years have passed by, and I do want to communicate with you but I do not know where to start. I remember Taru, I remember Rose (non-Ismaili) who was very good in sports. Do you remember we also used to do gardening during our school days, play on the lovely green lawn, at recess eat masi’s tasty chana bateta …
Your brother’s Singh friend’s name is Harminder Singh, we were in the same class, and they used to live down the mountain… have no contact of him.

Harminder was one of those lads who always looked smart. If you remember him his hair were never out of line. He passes in Uganda. May he rest in peace.
I think his sister is Indiu Kaur Sohal I know she is in Canada sorry no more information on her.
Her two younger sisters were Manjit and Jito both in Nairobi.
They lived in Ruaha as you went down to ruaha crossed the ruaha bridge there was the first house on the left with many cars and trucks outside.His dad run a transport Company.
Just reading my autograph book with Harminders word they are true to the last letter.I will try and upload these for you.

Hi Iringawallas, My name is Julie (Nensi). I lived in iringa with my grandparents near the Aga Khan School. My parents lived in Njombe. A small town and most of the kids (at that time) went to Iringa to study. Some of you may remember Shiraz Sacehina or Nasir Juma (Chagolo as he was called in those days…)
Directly opposite my grandparents house the Jamals lived. My uncle owned the petrol station opposite the book store. My Masi and uncle owned a store near the sokoni his name was Abdul Jaffer. My cousin Iqbal Jaffer lives in Dar. My Mums brother (mama) had a store in Ifunda called Ifunda Store… Many memories of the times there and the Julo (swing)..
Nevin Jivraj lives in Toronto. She was practicing medicine for a long while but I believe she is not now. Her husband is also a DR. The last name is Aziz.
I was in the same class as Nadia, Yasmin Hamir, Tazim Jessa, Shenaz Sajan and Rozy Sajan, Harminder and some that I do not remember..
Some of you may remember Salim Manji and Rosemin Manji… The are both in Toronto.. Salim is married to Laila (Ladha) Rosemin Manji’s daughter is getting married in two weeks in Toronto. Rosemin Ladha also lives in Toronto and I met Anar Walli yesterday who is presently living in Calgary and presently visiting Toronto.
I have met Yasmin a few years back in Van and Nadia and I meet often as we go to the same JK. Yasmin Jamal lives in Toronto.

I used to remember the roll call for our class by heart. The problem is the old memory has faded a little bit but somehow I remember the last name on the roll call was yes you gussed it Zaitun Shivji, She was quite petit and a very nice person very quiet and a little shy compared to us all loud mouths! My dad used to work in TFA which was just at the corner, close to the hotel. Opposite the hotel, Mr. Kapoor lived. Where do live now and where is the family.

Me and my 2 older brothers leave in Toronto, Muhammad lives in Paris France and my other brother works for AKDN and lives in Dubai. My Mom passed away in 1993 and my Dad in 1996. I am in the Bayview/Sheppard area but go to Etobicoke JK.
I have 2 sons, one is finishing University this year and another is in Grade 3, yes Grade 3 …. :) my wife and I started the parenting thing all over again in 2004…….

One of your older brothers was in the same class as me, his name was I think Alnoor this was in 1967. We were the last to take the ‘Teritorial’ exams!. I was also a scout the troope was run by your older brother or uncle. I lived opposite the Kapoor Household and next to the police station near the bakery! I remember your family buying the Ambassador Hotel in 1966 !! I used to walk home with your older brother. Was his name Alnoor and is he in the USA?

I kind of remember Iringa , my family i mean my parents & brothers lived near Akbers guest house at Uhuru street & in front of Iringa Timber store ( owned by another Mr. Akber who lived next to the Jamat Khana, My father ( who died in 1975) was best friends with both they used to have weelky get together.
i studied at Highlands secondary school i remember we used to have an indian teacher who used to teach us hindi his name was Mr. Pandya i learnt “om jai jagdish hare & darshan do ghanshyam “, from him , he was very deciplined.
i had a friend Nadia who had a shop near sokoni & lived behind my house in Jamat street & another friend mahinder kaur who lived in Ruaha she had 2 brothers & 2 sisters they were into timber bussiness i think.
i left Iringa in 1975 after losing my father Mr. Mehta . Am now living in India & am working in Bangladesh in the Ready made garments Industry .

I had great pleasure going through all the e-mails which started on my memory lane jogging about Iringa. You young ones have kept in contact and that is wonderful.
I am from Iringa, son of SONRA: Mr. C. R. Raninga.
I did my primary school at Agakhan School which was far away from the town. Cannot remember the name of the area. After that went to Agakhan School in Dar, followed by India where I did my veterinary medicine, followed by post graduate at Edinburgh and Tuskugee. Have worked in Zambia, Malawi, West Indies etc.
I just remember a handful of my classmates from Iringa: Nizar Kasam Walji, Kartar Singh Amar Singh, Suman Pancholi, Dolat Juma, Yasmin Merali Daya. These two ladies were really clever. We had headmistress by the name of Mrs. Baross followed by some gentleman.
My younger brother Shahsi also went to Agakhan school. May be some of you know him.
Mr. Akbarali’s Hotel, Suleman Manji’s cycle shop Rajabali Shivji, Iringa Bookshop, Iringa Railway Station, Iringa Printers, Ratansigh place as we use to stay next to them, then we had Iringa Trading stores.There was Mambo Leo stores his son use to be a classmate. Use to know Nure Mohamedali Shivji.
Iringa was really beautiful town then. People use to say Iringa watu na ringa.Have not been there since 1971.

I am Nure Mohamedali Rajabali Shivji. Of course, I remember you and all the others you have mentioned. Your dad was Iringa’s “Sonara” and his shop was next to our store. Nizar Kassam Walji is here in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Dolat is in Toronto. When I last visited Iringa in 1997, I met “Ladhio” ( Nizar Ladha Shivji). He passed away last year in Iringa. One of his brothers (diamond) and his sister Dilshad are in Vancouver. I would like to hear from you to catch up. I had attended a re-union in Toronto couple of years ago and it brought back a lot of memories

I use to live above the timber workshop and I do remember Rattan Mendhi who lived across the road from our workshop.I also remember the Iringa Trading family the brother and sister and I think the chap had polio in one leg. I may be wrong but did you guys have a Peugeot 404 with sitckers all over and then one day they were all gone. I was a bit younger that you guys. My Day passed in 1970 and then my Mum passed in 1974 and me and my younger brother moved to london.
Iringa was certainly a magical place.

I left Iringa in 1970 and went to London for treatment for my polio in my right leg.
My cousin, Mehdi Ratansi used to live across from you.
I came back and then left for Karachi, Pakistan in 1971, stayed there till 1976, and then came to Vancouver, Canada.
I married Zinat Saferali, originally of Njombe and Iringa. we got married in Canada in 1978.
we have 2 adult children, our son Abid is now 27 years and just graduated as a CA and works for Deloitte in Vancouver.

Malkit Singh (another of our classmates) and I often would come to the workshop to watch the workers split huge logs using open bandsaws – no safety goggles, helmets, or the like!!

Many thanks for your response. Ratan Singh Bros was a well known establishement. I remember Gurmit singh. We use use to go to Agakhan School. At times in the morning I me my borther Shsahi use to jump in the lorry to go to school. Our house was just behind your famous building and Iringa Trading building.

My name is Zahir Khatau, we did go to AgaKhan primary school in Beautiful Iringa in early 60’s my brother NIzar and sister Parviz. We lived in Iringa only few years but those were the memorable years of our childhood, I remember our teacher Mr Khan and religion teacher Mr Dhanani.
My parents had their store near Jamat Khana, I belive it was the 3rd building going up the street in front of Iringa Tradings, we moved to Congo after that.
Malkit and Sirjit Sing were my good friends of mine, if anyone knows there whereabouts or have an email address please let me know appreciate your help.

Abid just completed his CA program and is now a CA, working for Deloitte in Vancouver.

My name is Alnoor Mohamedali Shivji and we used to live in Iringa as well many years ago. I currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area along with my wife and three children. My brother Nurdin Mohamedali Shivji lives in Vancouver as do my brothers Madat and Salim, and sister Najma. My brother Mansur who you may know also lives in Edmonton. Off course we used to live in Iringa across from the Sokoni. You may remember my dad Mohamedali Shivji and my uncles Sadru and Anu. I attended Agakhan Primary School only a few years since we moved to Dar but I do remember many of my classmates including Meena Shivji, Riaz Mawani, Tasim Jessa, Salim Ladha, Alnasir Shivji and Yasmin Hamir. Even though we had moved to Dar, we used to go to Iringa regularly to visit my grandmother and vividly remember Jamat street and White Horse Inn as well as the Ambassador Hotel. There was a reunion in Toronto a few years back and we were able to meet several of my classmates after many years. This blog had brought wonderful memories. Thank you all!

I lived at the boarding school with Mr Dhanani a great influence to us as all the other teachers. I studied Accounting n computers in England and Sweden, have a son with a Swedish gal from the 70’s and am now planning to retire single in Vancouver!

Attended the Aga Khan School Iringa from 1948 to 1950. My father was in the Police and we were transferred from Korogwe to Iringa. This was my third school in Tanganyika. Out Head teacher was Mr Sheikh, whose son I met in London. I remember ” Iringa Stores” which was situated opposite the school. One of their daughters was a senior student in our school. She had bobbed hair and was a very kind person. There was a Hindu Akhada near bye and a “Jugu” seller from whom we bought hot roasted peanuts and enjoyed them in the cool crispy evenings of iringa. Memories have faded but not died.
Another teacher I remember was MR Dharsi.

I have just spent quite the last few hours trolling through this nostalgic reminiscence from former attendees of Aga Khan Primary and Secondary schools in Iringa. It was heart-renderingly poignant, it even brought tears to my crusty eyes, all because of a certain Nalini Dilip Desai, who was seeking her old school mates from Iringa ! Although I am not from Iringa myself, I grew up in DAR before being moved to Nairobi to learn English in the early 1970’s and then followed the common exodus to Canada in the mid 1970’s.
I visited Iringa in 2012 when I was checking out a mine site around Ruaha Darajani. I was smitten by Iringa. It is indeed a beautiful city with excellent climate and what appeared to be very lush and fertile climate and hence great vegetation.
I would highly recommend contact Mr. Rahim Premji of Premji Store in Iringa. He was incredibly helpful even though he was not in Iringa at the time of our visit in 2012. He can be reached at r_premji@hotmail.com. He is a fellow Ismaili and will be able to give you whatever details you may need about Ismailis in the area today.

Its a wonder of today’s technology – bringing people together with their thoughts and sharing the lovely memories. People from a small n beautiful town and they are all over the world, thanks to the Aga Khan legacy for giving us so memorable times. Regards to all reading this, I visit the site now n then n read the different stories. Went to Rajasthan for leopard sighting during Diwalli – for a glimpse of few minutes we would spend hours on the safari. What a change from the natural different animal sightings in the wilderness when travelling on the Iringa Daresalam road !!!

Greetings. Sorry to burst in on you folks from Iringa, y’all being of the Asian community. Most of you may probably know my father, Joseph Mungai, who went to St. Georges and St Michaels (not sure if I got the name right) which later was called Mkwawa Secondary/High School and is now a University. My paternal grandfather, James Mungai, originally from John’s Corner (present day Mafinga), at one time owned the Toyota Bar in Mshindo almost opposite the Esso filling station, my maternal grandfather, William Chawe, worked for Railways and later had his own fleet of buses called Tanganyika Bus. On reading some of these letters I got tidbits of places familiar to you all – the Ambassador Hotel is still there opposite the Tanganyika Farmers Association, in fact, I was recently there to watch an English Premier League game, I don’t know who owns it, though.
I stumbled onto this site simply because I was searching for old photos of the White Horse Inn, later to be (Railways) Iringa Hotel (the hotel is now run down and shuttered). See, my father and uncle, Charles Mungai (aka CDJ, he owned the Singer Sewing Machine franchise situated in Uhindini (Jamaat street?) bought out the Iringa Hotel when it came up for auction – the plot also included the old Iringa Store next door. Plans are to tear it down and build a modern hotel at that site and I think it will be fitting to incorporate at least some photos of the old White Horse Inn within the “new’ hotel. I understand someone in here their parents were photographers or owned photo studios – we frequented one in the building that housed the Highlands cinema (Tivoli?)

Nice to know someone with such a close connection with Iringa as you appear to have. We lived opposite the Tivoli Cinema next to the ‘new’ Police Station which was built in 1967. We lived there after moving from my uncles house next to the Agakhan School. My grandfather Dr Y.B Kelshker (Bwana mganga?) like his son was also a doctor and had a small private surgery on the corner just before we left Iringa. The Ambasador hotel was slightly up hill from us. I remember going to the White Horse Inn too and playing snooker there. They had a wonderful table there, we used to sneak in when some of the Greek patrons were busy playing cards and such like! The library was just up the road from there on the left as you went up the hill. On the left of the man entrance as you exited one went downhill and into a Eucalyptus forest. I can to this day shut my eyes and be there. , it was as if it was yesterday! Looking at Google maps it appears that the whole place has altered a little. Does the Ruhaha river still flow? We often went there and picnicked around the bridge on the Mbeya road. I do not have any photos of the White Horse Inn but I do have a friend who may have stayed there in the late seventies on his Mining travels and may just have a photograph.

What a surprise………!!
My name is Mohamed Hamir. I grew up in Iringa. My family lived right next to the Ismaili Jamat Khana on Jamat street. My grandfather had built the Jamat Khana in 1930s for the Ismaili community. I studied at the Aga Khan Secondary School in Iringa and later on attended Mkwawa in 1964 for a few months. I met you father there. He was the Head Prefect at Mkwawa. I got to know him quite well as we shared interest in politics and good Indian food. In fact my mother enjoyed cooking his favorite dishes a few times he had the opportunity visit our home with me. He was a very gracious and charming man and my family enjoyed his visits.
I left Makwawa and Iringa in 1964 to pursue further studies in the UK and later to USA. I now now live in USA. Your father and I communicated for a few years but at some point we lost contact. I have very fond memories of my association with him. He was a very smart young man, which obviously translated in to his vast successes in politics and government service in Tanzania.
I hope your father has some remembrance of our association. Please convey my best wishes to him.

Jimmy: this is Rod Stanley, who taught at Mkwawa from 64 to 72, and therefore knew Joe. I did not teach him because I did physics, and he did not. I have been putting together a history of Mkwawa at that time, because I haven’t seem anything else in print about the school since it ceased being St M and G. Or the chapters on Iringa, I have been looking for pictures of the White Horse Inn to put in the book but I have not been able to find one. If you know of one, I’d be happy to get a copy

Hi, Dr. Roderic Stanley, Joseph Mungai passed on November 8, 2016 and was buried in Mafinga (then John’s Corner).
Interesting thing is that he, too, and the family are looking for old photographs of the White Horse In, (later came to be called Iringa Railway Hotel, then just Iringa Hotel) The reason being is that the property was auctioned off and it is my father, the late Joseph Munga,i and my uncle Charles Mungai bought it. It is now boarded up with plans to build it up into a modern hotel in the future.
If you do manage to get pictures of the White Horse Inn, please share.

I have however lived all over the country during my career in finance and banking: Bloomington, Indiana; Chicago; San Francisco; Pittsburgh; Philladelphia; Washington D.C.; Los Angeles area, NYC area.
During 1990s and early 2000s we ( I was the Chairman) held several Iringa schools renions in Toronto and used to enjoy meeting everyone who attended. Need new blood to organize another reunion somewhere!

I am Suryakant Patel used to live in Barstow if you remember you and Hashibhai’s son ami stopped at my motel on your way to Las vegas, Don’t remember the year ? 1985 I built new motel ‘STARDUST INN’ IN
Barstow and sold this motel in 2003 and retired, at present we live in Diamond bar californina. I meet Bhasker Panchal very often.
By the way how is your brother Nizar and your dad, I used t own Azimio Hardware store in Iringa.

My friend Salim Manji – Cricketer – recently passed away. Many of you may remember him – leaves behind many memories and a wile Lelila Manji who is also an incredible person. Leila – we are all with you and pray for you and will miss Salim.
I have read many more comments on this site since I first wrote on it – so pleasant to get updated with the Iringans.
Nizar HV – I was in your class – with Shashikant Iringa Printers – Amir Shariff ” of the Nache man mora dhi ga na dhig dhiK ” Beltshazaar – always into politics – Hussein Chando and one other HOCKEY player whose name I forgot – of course – And of course Diamond Juma (RIP) – Mohammed Wali (returned from Makwawa – he is now in Canada) – besides some of the names you mentioned.

To all the cricketers – What fun it was to beat Mbey and especially Dodoma – to qualify for Isherwood cup tournament. We had fast bowlers like Mohammed Noormohamed – a real stylish and classy WKT Keepr Firoz Gangji (both class of 64) – I forget the name of the Captain – when we beat Dodoma in the afternoon session and a lot of people used to come and watch the game- and always a challenge to play Makwawa – Mr Oram’s Team. Then – when I was in Class of 65- Diamond Juma was the Wkt Keeper – along with Salim Manji Salim Hassam, Badru ??? – and others – The bust trip to Dar was fune – Salim and Ashraf (notorious) – decided to get into Mr Shikh’s lunch box and ate the Chicken Curry and Roti _ AND MR SHEIKH -was so GRACEFUL AND LAUGHED about it – what a way to handle the situation.

Good to hear from you! It’s been couple of years since I last communicated on this site.
Salim Manji’s passing has been a very sad event for me. He was afflicted with cancer late last year. I went to Toronto to see him on Sunday, 25th of August 2018. He was in difficult health condition. On following Wednesday the 29th he passed way peacefully. . I was fortunate to spend the last four days of his life with him, his wife Leila, his sister Rosemin and several family members. Clearly it was a premature passing. His funeral was attended my many Iringans. We recalled fond memories of moments and events we shared with Salim.
Salim and Leila and I had become closer friends during last forty years. We met every couple of years and communicated on regular basis. I miss him a lot!
Shashikant and Bhaskar, since we live relatively closely in Southern California, it will be great to meet you. Send me an e-mail at: mhamir1@yahoo.com and see if we can share a thali in Little India in Artesia one of these days. It will be great to reacquaint with you both. I live near San Juan Capistrano.

Very sad to hear of Salim Manji’s passing away. I remember his spin bowling and great batting too. I was a junior cricketer who had the fortune of batting against him and the terrifying fast bowling of Mohammed Walli. I faced both of them. Great practice, also learnt batting from Bhasker and Shashikant Patel another fast bowler!
My condolences to his family, may his soul rest in peace.

Wow how did I get here? was a student at Aga Khan Primary from 1966 and later secondary, I am writting memories of my younger days, and of course those years are there.
